Abstract:The psychological distance between superiors and employees in German firms has grown over the past two decades. This fact has been empirically verified by Reinhold Bergler. This lecture, delivered on the occasion of Bergler's sixtieth birthday in the University of Bonn, analyzes the strategic responses of firms to the efficiency losses that result from the increased distance between superiors and workers. The author - paradoxically - recommends a strategy of further increases of the leadership distance: by decentralizing control in large firms and by policy of spin-offs of small firms. The inefficiencies of grat leadership distance may well be overcome by a policy of "being one's own boss".
