Abstract: | In market economies the employment relationship has been commonly understood as a transient equilibrium between the conflict and cooperation forces. Some contemporary accounts however have argued that the employment relationship is changing in fundamental ways. These arguments have been mistaken because they seem to confuse changes in employment arrangements and changes in the employment relationships core features. The authors examine if employments relationships core characteristics persist as it is rooted in the market economies. This is done by conducting a survey among Irish white-collar union members and exploring if new working arrangements are associated with changes in attitudes and behavior. The results show that the new working arrangements are not eradicating the conflicted attitudes that are associated with the psychological contract and the traditional employment relationship. |
