Abstract:The women's hosiery market comprises tights, stockings, "hold-ups" and "knee highs". About 420m pairs of women's hosiery items were sold in 1992. Increased popularity of longer lasting opaque products led to a fall in volume sales in 1992 but as such items are higher priced, sales value remained steady. Tights continue to dominate the sector but knee highs have doubled in sales volume and in market share in the last two years, at the expense of stockings. Demographic changes resulting in increased numbers of women in the 45-54 age range should enhance the potential for hosiery offering figure control and bodyshaping.
