Abstract:In 1985 a young social worker in Chicopee, MA, a factory town on the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts, began to attend a writing workshop in Amherst, a college and university town up the river. Her teacher was Pat Schneider, founder and director of Amherst Writers and Artists, poet, librettist, playwright, novelist. After earning her M.F.A. in writing at the University of Massachusetts, Pat knew how she didn't want to teach writing.
