Abstract:Women have come a long way in family business. A stereotype can no longer depict Dad tinkering with some widget in the garage while Mom tries to balance the company books by serving the kids makaroni and cheese. Today, spouses might share executive and caretaker roles. Back in the 1940s, the outward division of labour in "family business" seemed to be split among semantic lines - the family part belonged to the husband. Mom formerly focused primarily on meeting the needs of the family - needs for care, intimacy, and a sense of belonging.
