Abstract:This paper describes the findings of a survey made in top economics graduate schools relating to women and men. The evidence shows that women are not well integrated into the economics programs. The paper suggest that the emphasis on theoretical studies in the current core of the graduate economics program can be seen as a type of hazing process that seems to have significant cost as many women with great creative promise are discouraged from continuing in economics and do not benefit nearly as much as they would have from more policy-driven courses.
