Abstract:A comprehensive screening programme is being introduced in which all women between the ages of 20 and 64 are to be screened at five-yearly intervals. A model was commissioned as a response to requests from districts for an estimate of the resource implications of cervical cytology screening. It took more than a year to develop the model, which provides quantification of the consequences of screening within a flexible framework. The development of the model through its various stages to completion is described, showing how each version of the model raised new questions to be addressed and how these led to further changes in the model structure.
