Abstract:Engineering is still a world where men are in the workshops and women are secretaries. But the situation is constantly improving and gender becomes less of an issue. In the UK only 12 percent of students entering university in engineering disciplines are women, and the number actually working in the profession are even less, about 2.7 percent. The reasons are discussed in depth. Some women working in actual engineering jobs were interviewed to find out how they feel as engineers. For example Kate Lovett, a production engineer of Jaguar motor cars, Patricia Vaz, general manager of British Telecom Payphones and Isobel Pollock, divisional engineering manager at Dupont Howson were asked.
