Abstract:7,3 billion musical items are broadcast and publicly performed each year. This paper reviews a benchmark study for the Performing Right Society which collects license revenue to distribute amongst its members, to examine all areas of music use within the UK. Music is publicly played in pubs, nightclubs, restaurants, concert halls and shops. We may also be part of a public performance of music when we sit in a taxi and listen to the radio or when we are placed on hold on the telephone.
