Abstract:An article in a 2006 Tourism Management proposes using specific robust estimators to determine "better" estimated means for long-tail distributions. Long-tail distributions occur frequently for amounts and quantities and that is the reason why getting better estimates matters. This paper focuses on obtaining relatively low variability estimates that are not "too" biased. Attributes of long-tail distributions are illustrated by using real data. Results reveal that some robust estimators suggested for producing better estimates are badly biased and therefore not better. This article also discusses three ways of obtaining lower variability estimated means and totals that are not "too" biased.
