Abstract:Neighboring countries, Norway and Sweden, have several common features, e.g. the same GDP per capita level. However, there has been big difference between Swedish and Norwegian car density. The aim of this article is to show the economic and political reasons behind this private car ownership development. A long run comparison, covering over a 50-year period from the 1950s to the 2000s, highlights the national and regional patterns that have affect on the car density.
