Abstract:As everyone knows, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity comes in waves. The last great tsunami crested in the late 1980s, as American industry was convulsed by leveraged takeover battles while companies across Europe jostled for position in the run-up to the EU's single market. But the M&A cycle is not necessarily synchronous with the economic cycle: while boom times spawn eager buyers flush with cash and credit, recessions can also bring out sellers anxious to shore up their balance sheet by unloading non-core assets, or to buttress their competitive position through strategic alliances.
