| Abstract: | The environment commissioner in the new Commission due to take office early in 1995 is Mrs Ritt Bjerregaard, a Danish social democrat and former minister of education and social affairs. The appointment of a Scandinavian to the environment portfolio suggests that pressures within the Commission for environmental protection and improvement are unlikely to slacken. The environment council does not appear to share the sense of urgency. |
