| Abstract: | At the end of January the Commission issued its long-awaited green paper reviewing the operation of the merger control regulation, and proposing a number of amendments so as to take into account developments in the marketplace and incorporate the experience gained from five years' operation of the regulation by the Commission's merger task-force. In announcing the green paper. Commissioner Karel Van Miert stated that "the major goal of these correctives is to maintain and improve a pragmatic concept that bestows legal security on companies but that has to be further adapted to the realities of the large European market as it has developed since 1993. |
