Abstract:In many ways, the pre-1914 period of economic liberalization and shrinking transport costs offers a superb historical laboratory for trade theory and, by extension, for the study of the political economy of a globalizing world. In the broad multidisciplinary literature the Heckscher-Ohlin model stands as a central explanatory device, so it is essential that we be sure of its accuracy and usefulness. Until now we have not seen any direct tests of its validity in the manner of factor content studies: this paper fills that gap.
