Abstract: | In the Latvian public mind collectivization is impossible to separate from the mass deportations of March 1949. Given the sheer horror of those events, when 50,000 alleged Latvian 'kulaks' were 'resettled' in Siberia, it is quite understandable that in the post-Soviet years those Latvian historians who have taken an interest in agricul- tural matters should have focused their attention on this assault on the 'kulaks'. The timing of the initial decision to collectivize Latvian agriculture is of exceptional importance since it illustrates the sometimes difficult relationship between the Latvian Communist Party Central Committee Bureau (LCP Bureau) and the USSR Communist Party Central Committee's Bureau for Latvia (Bureau for Latvia), which oversaw the work of the LCP from December 1944 until March 1947. |
