Abstract:JIT (just in time) systems are capable delivering enormous improvements in performance of British factories. JIT aims at slashing inventory levels and improve customer service by producing not only by the exact time the customer requires, but also in the exact quantity he needs. JIT manufacturers aim for smaller batch sizes and lead times in order to react to customer demands. Due to JIT system cycle time and work-in-progress may shrink from weeks or days to hours or minutes. Quality problems are identified downstream of where they were produced: at the next machine, or at an inspection point. Tackling instability, it turns a potential risks into a competitive advantage.
