Abstract: | Microcomputer-based scheduling systems are dramatically enhancing the ability of manufacturing firms to respond rapidly to changing customer demands. The development and application of a heuristic used for scheduling jobs on parallel processors within the batch process industries are presented. A sequencing heuristic implementable on a microcomputer provides the planning tool necessary to systematically sequence multiple item products in a cost effective manner, of particular concern in the batch process industries where machine utilization is of immediate concern. The heuristic is designed and developed in direct cooperation with a fiberglass manufacturer. |
