Abstract:The structure and distribution data of the employed among the young of China and Hong Kong suggest that unemployment of the young on the mainland is a structural one in nature. If the percentage of those employed in the tertiary industry can reach half of that of Hong Kong, namely 27.5 percent employment of the young will change drastically. Analysis of changes in evaluation and choice of careers on the part of the young in China and Hong Kong reveals that in spite of divergences, standards for economic and social status of the mainland youths in choosing careers are quite different from a decade ago, and nearing those of Hong Kong in some respects.
