Abstract:Lau Ah Kouk jumped 3 meters from the roof of a stone hut onto police arriving to evict him from his hope of 35 years. It didn't do him any good; he was carried away on a stretcher. Lau was one of the last hodouts at Rennie's Mill, a village in Hong Kong's Kowloon peninsula that was home to hundreds of ex-soldiers of Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist army and their families. After the final evictions July 30, the town will be turned into another of Hong Kong's nondescript though efficient apartment complexes.
