Abstract:Why Deng's death didn't rattle Hong Kong's "red-chips". The lines of mourners in front of New China's News Agency office in Hong Kong stretched from the entrance, though a tunnel under the road, and along the green expanse of the Happy Valley race track. In the days following Deng Xiaoping's death, thousands of people filed into what is effectively China's consulate in the colony, to pay their last respects. Once inside the building, they couldn't help but notice an ornate flower arrangement placed just outside the designated "mourning room".
