| Abstract: | Companies need strategies for building critical capabilities to achieve competitive advantage. During the 1980s, US manufacturing companies rediscovered the power that comes from superior manufacturing and initiated a variety of activities to improve their competitiveness. The authors propose a new explanation for the problems that many companies have experienced with improvement programs. Their view reflects the current shift in thinking not only about manufacturing but also about the essence of competitive strategy itself. |
