Abstract: | This article explores two dimensions of language (hereafter as: d-of-l.), the determinants of immigrants' language proficiency (henceforth as: l-prof.) and language use (as: l-use). It is questioned whether similar or different patterns underlie these two d-of-l. The data is collected from large-scale, repeated cross-sectional surveys especially designed to study Turkish and Moroccan immigrants in the Netherlands. The focus is on Dutch speaking skills and Dutch l-use with the partner. It is shown that despite speaking ability and l-use with the partner generally go hand-in-hand, the correlation seems modest. Among others, it is found that l-prof. and l-use are equally affected by migration motive, settlement intentions and ethnic concentration in the neighbourhood etc. |
