Abstract: | This paper aims at developing understanding of how competent practitioners develop into experts via learning expert thinking processes and how knowledge management (KM) initiatives can be used to structure this development. Based on a literature review, a research model supporting the semi-structured interviews with over 20 acknowledged experts from a variety of disciplines and sectors. A qualitative exploratory research design was used to study how the experts function in developing other professionals. The implications for KM programs were developed together with KM practitioners. The experts used various methods to visualize their thinking via demonstration and direction of structured learning activities. KM's contribution is in structuring approaches to making work in progress more visible and through introducing a coaching framework enabling and supporting reflection on practice. |
