Abstract:The fast growing UK market for organic food, for example for all foods which carry an organic symbol, is investigated. Organic food form a fifth of the health, slimming and dietetic foods market. Sales were worth GBP 504 million in 1991, 20 percent up on 1990, regarding all health, slimming and dietetic foods. Within this market, organic foods have grown quickly into a GBP 107 million market but face an uncertain future. The largest sector is fresh fruit and vegetable, reaching GBP 65 million in 1991. High prices and quality problems have led to market uncertainty. Organic meat market has benefited from doubts about safety of traditionally reared meat. This market is expected to grow by 35 percent over 1991-1996.
