Abstract:John Rawls and Robert Nozick provide an ethical framework for dealing with intellectual property issues in the context of pharmaceutical patents. Nozick upholds an individual's right to intellectual property, whereas Rawls emphasizes the importance of basic liberties (eg. the right to health). From a policy perspective, drug patents always entail the balancing of corporate intellectual property interests and the public interests in healthcare, often creating a moral dilemma. This article examines the economic and ethical factors surrounding the production and distribution of the anti-HIV medication, AZT.
