| Abstract: | The performance of British companies has been transformed over the past decade, and 1987 was another year of progress. Company profits and earnings rose strongly again, and despite increased spending on capital investment, acquisitions and higher dividend payments to shareholders, companies continued to strengthen their balance sheets. The strong performance of the British economy in recent years has been an important stimulus for growth in the corporate sector. Growth in output and employment has tended to come in the service sectors of the economy. |
