Abstract:Ten million Americans could be working at home within the next 15 years, linked to corporate headquarters only electronically. Few companies, however, have studied the pros and cons of telecommuting and have no way of evaluating its impact. An extensive survey conducted by the Toronto-based Hudson's Bay Company is used as the basis for an approach to the issue. Linking promotability with visibility and concentrating on hours worked rather than overall effectiveness are considered unresolved problems of telecommuting. A data integrity problem arise if the company does not develop a strategy to ensure access only to certain information.
