Abstract: | Evidence is presented on some of the key variables that have determined the economic status of different groups in the working population. The level and security of real income and consumption set the economic status. They are determined by access to resources in the labour market, public services and social security, and in housing. The period between 1880 and 1990 is reviewed and the likely situation in 2000 is put forward. |
