Abstract:A major new item of legislation seeks to address France's rising unemployment - 3.3 million, or 12%, at the end of 1993, and rising - through a wide range of measures, mainly focused on boosting job creation. The law's provisions cover areas as diverse as reduction in employers'social security contributions, simplifying employee representation procedures and encouraging worksharing through hours and pay cuts. In the first part of the article, the law's main provisions on creation and maintenance of employment, employee representative bodies, organization of working time and developing part-time work are outlined.
