Abstract:The adjustment of industries of East Germany to the conditions and requirements of market economy seems to be more difficult that anybody could forecast two years ago. The problems of structural changes of industrial organization are highlighted. It is shown how industrial reorganization and privatization create reduction in production and investments, unemployment and a number of contradictions among the old and new Federal States. The regional economic policy in East Germany depends largely on the operation of Treuhandanstalt, an institution responsible for reorganization and privatization of low performing firms. Arguments are presented against an industrial policy that is inefficient, expensive and counter-productive.
