Abstract:This paper considers tiremaking - an industry with sprawling plants, fat inventories, and long cycle times is turning to speedy robots and novel processes. Pirelli, Goodyear, and other tire manufacturers are on a quest to transform the time-consuming and complex way tires are made - a process that hasn't changed significantly in the decades since radial tires came along. Big changes are tiremakers' only choice, if they are to survive in an era of massive overcapacity and falling prices. Major players like Goodyear, Michelin, and Bridgestone, the world's three biggest tiremakers, are battling one another as well as smaller rivals like Pirelli and upstarts in developing markets such as Southeast Asia.
