Abstract:This paper examines synergy developments in Kwinana and Gladstone, two important heavy industrial regions in Australia. Also drivers, barriers and trigger events for synergies initiatives in Kwinana and Gladstone are studied. The findings of this comparative analysis indicate that various regional synergy opportunities exist in both of these industrial regions; many opportunities exist especially in the areas of water and energy efficiency and exchanges, and reuse of industrial inorganic by-products. The article emphasizes the fact that overcoming barriers and boosting incentives are crucial in the further development of regional synergies in these regions.
