Abstract:The historical background of China's GATT membership is outlined. The country's request for resumption of its membership is described as a sign of an open trade policy aimed at achieving a greater degree of integration in the world economy. The status of bilateral agreements is analyzed. Factors of accessing the Chinese market are summarized. The question of the acceptance of certain undesirable clauses is raised. The legal situation of the country is compared with that of other socialist countries. The economic system and its compatibility with GATT is analyzed in detail. The status of Hong Kong is mentioned. Possible membership approaches and a possible form of declaration is presented.
