Abstract:Two major changes are under way in Japan: the building up of internal demand and translating it into a huge home market; and the transforming of factories into more advanced plants with flexible manufacturing systems. The implications are compared to the postwar efforts for industrial upgrading. Mergers and acquisitions in search for foreign assets, establishment of overseas research and development centres, integration of intra-regional operations, and intra-company imports from overseas investments are discussed. Foreign direct investments reflect the adaptive behaviour of the Japanese economy to the changing world economic conditions rather than the random market behaviour of its individual firms.
