Abstract: | The financial industry (hereafter as: f-indy.) is undergoing an unprecedented wave of consolidation due to fundamental changes in regulation and technology. This paper reviews critically works covering the main sectors of the f-indy. in the major industrialized countries over the last 20 yrs., searching for common patterns transcending national and sectoral peculiarities. It is found that consolidation in the f-indy. is beneficial up to a relatively small size, but there is little evidence that mergers yield economies of scope or gains in managerial efficiency. |
