Abstract:Drawing on cross-national panel surveys from Germany and Russia, this study performs a longitudinal test of a set of competing theoretical models. Using latent autoregressive cross-lagged models, it is found that perceptions of threatened group interests are causally antecedent to German's dislike and negative behavioural intentions against foreigners and to Russian's ethnic distance towards minorities. There is no support provided for the two alternative models. The study's findings are discussed as to the meaning for group threat theory.
