Abstract:Robbins' Essay gave economics a definition laying a foundation that could be seen as justifying both the narrowing of economic theory to the theory of constrained maximization or rational choice and economists' ventures into other fields of social science. This paper deals with the reception, diffusion and contesting of the Robbins definition. It is argued that this process has taken around three decades, and even then with significant dissent.
