Abstract:From the viewpoint of modern econometrics, this paper deals with Lionel Robbins' critical attitude towards formal empirical work. It is argued that his attitude was based on indefensible assumptions, failing to realize that the role he saw for empirical work undermined his belief in the priority of economic theory. This matters because Robbins' attitudes are echoed in modern economics.
