Abstract:The cognitive dimension of institutions has been relatively neglected in social science research. Particularly, economists have concentrated on how institutions offer incentives. Nevertheless, institutions also affect behaviors by influencing beliefs and expectations which help agents to overcome coordination problems. This article examines various aspects of how institutions may align agents' beliefs, concentrating on the role of analogies in interactive decision making, and how analogies grow from experience. The reasoning is illustrated by an empirical evidence.
