Abstract:By attaching a price tag to certain health risks (smoking or excessive use of alcohol) some companies hope employees will take the initiative to reduce the health risks that lead to expensive medical care. But in trying to control soaring health care costs, do employers have the right to encourage employees to change unhealthy lifestyles by offering financial incentives? Furthermore, does this approach really work? Added to the article is a short description of a wellness incentive plan of Hershey Foods Corporation, Pennsylvania and a description of the various forms that the financial incentives can take.
