Abstract:Throughout wide and long-term forestry research and practice the authors know scientifically and empirically very much about our forests, but the intentions and progress of sustainable forest management fall far behind the recognised needs. The majority of the indicators are based on scientific research, although some are designated also to measure social values related to forests and silviculture. This special issue of JEM aims to seek the reasons, interrelations and interactions, why our efforts to maintain forest biodiversity are often disoriented by multiple forces. The causal factors are manifold. The importance of forests and forestry varies between the societies and the national economies.
