Abstract: | It is argued whether multinational enterprises (MNEs) should adopt centrally coordinated, global corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies, or decentralized, local strategies. Global strategies, though efficient and extensive, may lack ownership and legitimacy on the local level. On the other hand, local strategies are more responsive, but can be fragmented. There is also a danger that subsidiaries target the potentially lower standards of the local context. This article examines this issue by studying CSR practices and subsidiary autonomy among Mexican subsidiaries of European MNEs. Surprisingly, the results indicate that in a 'lower CSR context' decentralized decision-making may be associated with higher local CSR performance. |
