Abstract:This article argues that a corporation's vulnerability to public scrutinity drives its corporate giving. The author testes the hypothesis that companies donate for strategic motives against the alternative thaat they do so for altruistic reasons. By investigating the philanthropic behaviour of 40 Fortune 500 companies over 7 years, it is found that companies are strategic as well as altruistic in their donations.
