Abstract:An emerging awareness questioning the long-term sustainability of an exclusive reliance on flood defences to protect the U.K. population against increased flood risk was reinforced due to the U.K. floods in late 2000. This paper explores the notion that, although social and technical issues are already being integrated to manage flood, practitioners are now realizing the importance of accommodating public hazard understanding and perception of risk into their management models. There also remains the need to fit such ideas to the insurance-based system of U.K. flood management.
