Abstract:To understand charitable giving and fund-raising among other things, it is crucial to know how giving depends on the number of recipients. The main question is how the size of the group receiving gift affects its value to the giver. Put differently, this article asks how congestible is altruism? A theorethical framework is presented to analyse this question and, in addition, a controlled experiment is used to find an answer to it. The results suggest that for most subjects altruism is congestible.
