Abstract:The research programme on the economics of happiness (henceforth as: e-of-h.) aims at changing welfare economics radically. This paper sets out to show that its foundations are not reliable. There are two basic theses: i) the e-of-h. shows inconsistencies with the first person standpoint, contrary claims on the part of the economists of happiness (as: h.) notwithstanding, and ii. h. is a dubious concept if it is understood as the welfare policies' goal. The a. and b. lead to a third thesis: iii. h. ought to be replaced by autonomy as the fundamental welfare economics' goal. A hedonic approach of h. is shown to lead to a tricky trilemma. In addition, the meaning of "happiness" and "autonomy" with their conceptual relationships are clarified.
