Abstract:In this essay, criticized is the proposal recently defended by a number of prominent economists of welfare economics being redirected away from the satisfaction of people's preferences and toward making people happy instead. In addition, examined and criticized is also the position associated with D. Kahneman and a number of co-authors taking welfare to be 'objective happiness', that is, the sum of momentary pleasures.
