Abstract:Amartya Sen suggests in his recent book The Idea of Justice, that political philosophy should move beyond the dominant, Rawls-inspired, methodological paradigm - called 'transcendental institutionalism' by Sen - towards a more practical approach to justice: 'realization-focused comparison'. In this article, it is argued that Sen's call for a paradigm shift in thinking about justice is unwarranted. It is shown that his criticisms of the Rawlsian approach base either on misunderstandings, or are correct but have little consequences. The conclusion is that the Rawlsian approach already delivers much of what Sen himself wants from a theory of justice.
