Abstract:The nature of pressure groups is examined. Their effect on corporate action and on managers is explored. The importance of seeking an understanding of pressure groups is emphasized. Although pressure groups can be responsible for constraining corporate action, they can also sometimes present business opportunities. It has been suggested that the three principal avenues of pressure are approached by groups in sequence: the executive, parliament and public opinion. Pressure groups have three major resources: commitment, organizational cohesion and strategic location. Management reactions to pressure groups may involve protest tactics and seeking public support or direct actions and seeking legal help.
